Five Easy Steps To Get CM9 On Your SGS2

CM9 is my favorite ICS ROM for the SGS2. I love Android's Holo theme for the ICS and CM9 brings it to the table. If you want to download CM9 for your Android phone, here are five easy steps to do just that.

Note: Your phone must be rooted. Clockworkmod Recovery image is also a prerequisite but you can flash it via ROM Manager. If CM9 doesn't show up when clicking 'codeworkx' on step 4, it's not compatible with your phone. Sorry :(
By the way, here is my review of CM9 XXLP6, the latest Cyanogenmod ICS build for SGS2. You can download it via ROM Manager as I did. Check out the installation guide for download links!

Step 1: Download ROM Manager on the Android Market (free)

Step 2: Launch ROM Manager.

If you don't have CF Root or Clockworkmod Recovery image, Select 'Flash Clockworkmod Recovery'. Select your device model when prompted.

Step 3: Select 'Download ROM'

Step 4: Select 'codeworkx'

Step 5: Download CM9 ROM of your choice.

There are also kernels available for download - those under 'Baseband'.

After selecting a CM9 ROM for download on your SGS2, this should appear on ROM Manager.

You will also see this on your notifications bar. Do not click it unless you want permission to cancel the download.

What Do I Do When CM9 Finishes Downloading?

STEP 1: When download is finished, ROM Manager will prompt you to install the ROM. Don't do it. Select 'Cancel'.

STEP 2: Check the downloaded CM9 ROM by going to sdcard/clockworkmod/download/developer.clockworkmod.com/downloads.

STEP 3

(Users WITH CF Root or Clockworkmod Recovery Installed) Backup your current ROM first using Clockworkmod Recovery. Do this by selecting backup and restore > backup while on recovery mode.

(Users WITHOUT CF Root or Clockworkmod Recovery) Backup your ROM by selecting Backup Current ROM on ROM Manager.

STEP 4: Confirm a successful backup by selecting backup and restore > restore on recovery mode or selecting Manage and Restore Backups on ROM Manager after reboot. I take the extra effort to restore the backup of my current ROM, just to check that it works. I also restore backups directly through Clockworkmod Recovery.

STEP 5: After making a backup and making sure that CM9 has been downloaded to your phone, you can now install it.

Here is an installation guide for XXLP6, the latest CM9 firmware :)

  1. This probably won't work on Sprint's version.

  2. Yeah, probably. As far as I know there is only Clockworkmod Recovery for AT&T and the international SGS2. Unless you have that, you can't flash this on your phone.
