As some of you may know, [S]he Talks Android participated in Operation Blackout against SOPA or the Stop Online Piracy Act. Wikipedia English also participated in this online strike and came up with the striking words:
So when I heard the news that Wikipedia for Android was released, I was quite surprised. The website's 24-hour strike wasn't even over yet and they already released an application for Android.
Btw, the app is FREE and available worldwide so go ahead and download it.

Imagine a world without free knowledge.

[S]he Talks App Rating & Review
Wikipedia for Android
by Wiki Apps
Wikipedia For Android was developed by Wiki Apps and is the official app for Android users. It allows you to browse not only Wikipedia but their travel resource website, Wikitravel. It only took me 5 minutes to review the app.
RATING: 5 out of 5.
PROS
RATING: 5 out of 5.
PROS
- App is FREE and available worldwide.
- Fast browsing of Wikipedia website.
- Loads faster than browsing Wikipedia on your mobile browser.
- Interface is smooth. Resembles mobile view. (See pictures below)
- Easy access to Wikitravel, an online resource for travel information.
- There is a newspaper section which gives you the two options: mobile view and desktop view. Whichever you choose, the view is consistent throughout.
- Online news resources are pre-loaded into the app's Newspaper section.
- You can add the URL of a news website you follow (that's not on the list)
- You can go pro by clicking Menu button > About > Buy Pro for $0.99
- PRO version for only $0.99
CONS
- There is an ad that displays on the bottom. While there is an option to 'hide ads' on the menu, the ad pops right back up after a few minutes.
FINAL VERDICT
For a free app, Wikipedia for Android is a hard 5 out of 5. I didn't find any glitches, user interface was simple and smooth, everything loads faster than a mobile browser (even images), and the ads weren't interfering with Wikipedia's goal to provide free education.
But I suggest you go pro, just to support Wikipedia. $0.99 for ad-free browsing on the app is definitely worth it.
