Custom kernels in .tar format must be installed using ODIN. In this guide I will teach you how to install custom kernels on your Samsung Galaxy S2 via ODIN. If you downloaded a .zip file you have to flash it with CWM Recovery. I prepared a separate installation guide for that which you will find here.
Prerequisites
- Custom kernel for your SGS2. Here's a list of custom kernels for SGS2 on ICS
- Rooted device [ How To Root Your SGS2 Using CF-Root - ICS only, sorry ]
- Compatible firmware (compatibility depends on kernel)
- At least 60% battery life (just to be safe)
- Download ODIN on your PC. Unzip the file. You can find the latest version in this XDA thread.
- USB Drivers
- USB cable
- Recommended: Nandroid backup
How To Install Custom Kernels On Your SGS2 With ODIN
- Download a custom kernel for your SGS2 in .tar format.
- Turn off your smartphone
- On your PC, launch the ODIN.exe file you unzipped from the prerequisites.
- On ODIN, click the PDA section and select the .tar kernel you downloaded from step 1. Don't click anything else.
- On your SGS2, go to Download Mode by pressing Volume Down + Power + Menu. Confirm by pressing Volume Up.
- Connect your phone to the PC via USB cable
- Check ODIN. A small box on the upper left should turn blue and the dialog box must display "Added!!"
- Select "Start" and wait for it to finish. After it is complete, your SGS2 will reboot on its own. You now have a custom kernel flashed on your phone!
How To Check For A Successful Custom Kernel Installation
Go to Settings > About Phone > Kernel Version. It should coincide with the kernel you just flashed. Enjoy!
